Tickling Lesson: Your dad tickles you. Bang! All of a sudden you’re laughing. You beg your dad to stop, so he does, but the feeling lingers. You try to tickle yourself but it doesn’t work. Why not? Well…People instinctively fear tickles because of the natural dread of spiders and insects crawling on you. When you get that feeling – the tickle – your brain freaks out because it’s unexpected and practically all your energy is immediately focused on two things; laughing, and escaping the tickle. We’re not sure exactly why you laugh, but we know it helps to calm you down when you’re stressed. So, basically, you can’t tickle yourself and get the same effect because even if you know the tickle is coming, your body is not prepared for it. Thus, in tickling yourself, the brain has already told the hands to move and therefore your nerves are ready for the feeling.
